Large Mammals
Large mammal species, especially large predators, are crucial for healthy ecosystems. They have a regulatory role in the ecosystem and balance the populations of herbivorous mammal species by hunting. There is a similar interaction on herbivorous mammals and vegetation. Herbivorous mammals can shape an ecosystem by suppressing vegetation in an area. In addition, large mammals enable plants to spread in an area by spreading their seeds, they are important for the functioning of the nutrient cycle and can work like an ecosystem engineer by influencing the shaping of habitats. In this context, 24 species continue to live in Türkiye.
In addition to large terrestrial mammals, Türkiye is home to 96 terrestrial small mammals, 39 bats and 13 marine mammals.
